Lion Monument

"The saddest and moving piece of stone in the world." That’s how the American writer Mark Twain described the sculpture of the mortally-wounded lion. The lion commemorates the 760 Swiss Guards who died in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The monument was designed by sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, and finally hewn in 1821 by Lukas Ahorn, in a former sandstone quarry.
